I am a Caregiver
In 2007, at the age of 20, I sat in the exam room with my then-boyfriend as he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Sean was 23. We spent the next 3 years together fighting his illness, treasuring time with family, getting engaged, married, graduating college and building our own family. In 2010, when I was just 4 months pregnant with our twin daughters, my sweet Sean passed away due to a brain hemorrhage caused by secondary leukemia and testicular cancer mets. Our life together was short, but sweet, and his legacy lives on in our daughters as they learn more about him and grow to be more like him every day. I am currently remarried to a stage 1 testicular cancer survivor. We joke that I have a thing for cancer patients. :) Matt and I raise our three daughters together (all of whom are Sean's biological children conceived via IVF since Matt was left sterile from his chemotherapy treatments). We both fully understand and appreciate that each day is a gift, and that our time on this earth is worth fighting for. I advocate for testicular cancer awareness, blog about my experiences as a caregiver and cancer wife/widow at the Huffington Post, and live each day with purpose and hope, just as Sean would have.
