Status changed from fighter to survivor, Jan 2015.
Hi, my name is Phil. I am Native American. I mostly live an academic life pursuing a double doctorate in Linguistics and Anthropology at the University of Arizona. In the midst of writing my dissertation, life happened in a big way when I was diagnosed with Stage III cancer of the prostate in late 2009 (my doc said I was “among the walking dead”...yes, humor).
From then on everything quickly went into motion. On April 2nd, 2010, I awoke from my robot-assisted (DaVinci) radical prostatectomy (University Medical Center, Tucson, AZ). My outlook was good and I was on my way to recovery. Fast forward to March 2011, tests showed renewed cancerous growth. 7 weeks of radiation (April to May) later, I catch my breath. To add to this story, on Oct 4 of 2012, I was in a major car accident and nearly lost my life. Incredibly, my recovery & healing from a broken pelvis has been quick.
Post UPDATE 2013-2016: Doctors have been waiting to confirm a (post-surgery, post-radiation treatment) pattern and it showed in tests from early 2013. New growth was relatively small but significant and by significant I mean dire. At the same time, however, I was beginning to experience profound spiritual and physical healing. Coinciding with this inner healing, the presence of cancer subsided dramatically! Then in 2014 and ongoing, my team of four doctors dismissed me from further treatments and intensive monitoring (to periodic 6 month monitoring). My main doctor said, "whatever you are doing keep doing it!"
It has been and still is an incredible experience. I can say without hesitation that trusting the universe matters greatly to the healing path one takes (medical, physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.). Thanks for taking the time to read my bio. If you've gotten this far, we should be friends. I really do mean that! Life always, Phil
